DOES SEX ADDICTION TREATMENT SUCCEED?The answer (secret) is in your subconscious...more below.

Most sex addiction therapies fail long term to change behaviors and thinking patterns. To understand why we must first look at what sex addiction is and what it is not.

Sex addiction, which is a subcategory of process addiction, can refer to a range of thinking and sex related behaviors that are performed in excess and negatively impact one’s life.

“Process addiction (Or Process Addictions) refers to the obsession to take part in certain activities or behaviors, such as gambling, the Internet, sex, and eating”.

“Sex addiction” is an official diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. However, a sex addiction can lead to serious consequences in many aspects of a person’s life.

Sex addiction, like other process addictions that one can become addicted to, can be best understood through the principles of what is called operant habituation.

This is where a certain sexual behavior, is reinforced, or rewarded, which in turn makes you want to do experience the addictive behavior again and then again.

Many different sexual behaviors can be reinforcing to repeat, and thus influence one’s behavior, but sex addiction can be especially reinforcing because the recompense taps into a very basic human instinctual drive of sex. Therefore, it is very easy to become addicted to sex and it’s retrieving an essential (and very pleasurable) natural human sex drive.

The sex addict behavior occurs when seeking sexual pleasure becomes excessive, impulsive, or comes at the expense of other valued actions or behaviors.

Sex addiction requires therapy. Both Individual and or group sex addiction therapy with a qualified mental health professional is almost always the best approach. Individual sex addiction therapy will usually consist of ten to twenty 60 minute sessions with a psychotherapist, focusing on subconscious issues related to sex addiction and any related addiction issues.
Group therapy will allow you to be in a community of others who are struggling with a similar experience.

Therefore, being addicted to sex is typically defined as a behavioral addiction. It is characterized by the compulsion to repeat sex type behaviors.

Note: The growth of the Internet has provided unlimited access to sex addictive materials at all levels of graphicness without leaving any evidence, which also makes it more difficult for family and friends to detect the sex addiction.

The signs and symptoms of a sex addict are comparable to the signs and symptoms of drugs or alcohol addiction. For example, a person with a sex addiction may begin to replace or neglect their relationships because of the preoccupation with sex, just as an alcoholic will replace these things with drinking a lot of alcohol. The signs and symptoms of a sex addiction vary depending on the person.

It is important that you seek sex addiction treatment or at least support if you feel that you are struggling with sex addiction. Different types of sex addiction treatments are available however it is critical that the therapy focus on subconscious issues that need processing and not the behaviors themselves.
